In February 2004, Harvard sophomore Mark Zuckerberg launched “The Facebook” as an exclusive social network for Harvard students. Facebook Acquires WhatsApp for $19 Billion
Since Facebook has turned ten they have acquired the popular messaging app called WhatsApp for $19 billion dollars of stock and cash. This acquisition was surprising to some people but, Zuckerberg says “I actually think that by itself it’s worth more than 19 billion”. One reason Zuckerberg might believe that is because WhatsApp is planning to add a free voice-call service for its 450 million customers by the end of this year, laying down a huge challenge to telecom network operators. Zuckerberg also stated that “By being a part of Facebook, it makes it so they (whatsApp) can focus for the next five years or so purely on adding more people.”
